It’s important to state the Play! emulator doesn’t give playable results even on the Nintendo Switch which is much more capable than the PSVita so even if Xerpi does indeed work his magic, commercial PlayStation 2 games will never be playable on the Vita although you could probably mess around with simpler PS2 homebrew if that’s your thing.
In a demonstration video posted on YouTube (below), the emulator is shown running the Teapot demo from PS2SDK not a commercial game and since it’s a proof of concept, we can conclude that if any games manage to run at all, they will probably be a slow slideshow at best.

Xerpi’s Play! port can indeed run PlayStation 2 binaries but don’t expect it to run more than a few simple pieces of homebrew with non-abysmal performanceīefore getting your hopes up high, it’s important to state that Xerpi’s Play! port is a proof of concept meaning that it was created to prove the emulator could run on the console. Just like using PPSSPP emulator to run PSP games on the smartphone, you can also use the DamonPS2 emulator to run PS2 video games. How does Play! perform? Can it play commercial games? Furthermore, he’s also been working on porting Linux to the console on-and-off so perhaps one day, we’ll see some lightweight distribution running on the console although things are still in early stages.

However, Xerpi has gone ahead to do the unthinkable and managed to port a PlayStation 2 emulator called ‘ Play!‘ to the console while also publishing a video of the emulator in action.įor those who are unaware of Xerpi’s feats, he’s the developer behind udcd_uvc, a kernel plugin that allows you to stream your PSVita’s screen to a PC in real-time thus giving it Switch-like abilities as you can play games in both handheld and TV mode.
The best place to find games that work on the Pi is Flathub.Ever since the dawn of the PlayStation Vita homebrew scene, a popular question has been whether the PlayStation Vita can emulate the PlayStation 2 due to its wealth of memorable titles and the answer has always been a flat no as the PSVita doesn’t have nearly enough power to emulate this beloved 6th generation console with playable performance. Some that work well on the Pi (with configuration) are SuperTuxKart, Minetest, etc. If you're interested in games that work really well on the Pi without config, try out Sonic Robo Blast 2 on Flathub. But back to if you just want to play PS2 games, and do nothing else with the Pi, possibly you could look into Mini-PCs? They're low-cost like the Pi, but run on normal x86 CPUs, so running PS2 (or even PS3) games would be easier on there, if you're just planning on using a Pi for playing PS2 games. Maybe you just stick with the defaults? I've gotten PSP games running at 120 fps and 4K on the Pi4 (although it still appears 60 because my screen is only 60hz).
Is it just me or do you just think the Pi can't run emulators/games very well? I got Dolphin running really well with minimal overclocking, but lots of configuration. The best you can expect to emulate well/good/okay is the PS1, Dreamcast, and PSP, only because there's very good ARM codegens for PCSX-Rearmed/Duckstation/Flycast/Redream/PPSSPP. What you'd need is an emulator that's actually written for ARM64 *and* Vulkan, and even then i'm still not optimistic on the results. Win11ing either will not produce miracles for a small Broadcom ARM SBC. PCSX2's too firm in x86 optimization that it's still trying to go x86_64 and is currently in the process of reworking itself of old plugin system cruft. Play!'s barely usable on today's x86 desktops.
